The Daily Check-In 11.18

Check in with yourself mid-week.
MOVE

Dance for your obliques.

This is a “sneaky” ab move, says Molly Day in her Ab Lab: Dancer’s Core class on Variis. “You get distracted by the hips and your core is burning up.” Try it by setting up to the side and doing four hip pops, then four leg lifts. “Think of hitting a tambourine with the side of your hips,” says Day. “It’s all about the obliques, pulling that hip bone up.”

EAT

Quick-hit lunch: chickpea-egg bowl

“This nutrient-rich salad doesn’t require any greens. The chickpeas give you enough protein to stay energized throughout the day,” says New York City-based recipe developer Julia Gartland. The bright herbs are a great way to elevate the dish both in presentation and taste, she adds.

DE-STRESS

Wear fleece-lined hats.

Lower humidity and colder temps can wreak havoc on your hair. But so can your choice of hat: Skip the wool, which can cause breakage, according to New York City–based dermatologist Rosemary Ingleton, M.D. Instead, look for hats that are lined with fleece or silk, which will keep hair hydrated and smooth.

CONNECT

Leave better comments.

“I look forward to a world where social media allows us to ‘like’ not someone’s whole post, but specific portions of that post,” says Daniel Sude, Ph.D., who recently conducted a study on the subject. In the meantime, try commenting with pointed thoughts about what you liked or didn’t like.

If you’re reviewing an Italian restaurant, it’s less helpful for others for you to simply say you did or did not like it. “It would be more helpful for you to say, ‘I loved the acidity in the sauce,’’” Sude says. That way, you both tune into your own experience and give other people information that they can use. “If it can make restaurant reviews more useful, imagine how this technique could help with the political discussions we see online,” Sude notes.
