TIGHT HIPS ARE LINKED TO BACK PAIN, MUSCLE ACHES, AND WEAKNESSES IN OTHER AREAS.

PRIME YOUR HIPS.

Matt Ortel uses banded knee marches as the first move in his Tabata: Banded Leg Work class on Variis. You should feel it in your hip flexors and quads, he notes. “Focus on keeping your feet under your shoulders. That band should never show any slack, [keep it] constantly tense.” Do 4 sets of 20 seconds.

MAKE SLOW COOKER CHILI.

Lean ground turkey and vitamin A-rich winter squash come together in this seasonal meal flavored with poblano chilis, cumin, and garlic. Chopped tortillas add texture and depth to the dish, which is largely a hands-off cooking endeavor and keeps in the refrigerator for up to one week. Serve over brown or cauliflower rice.

2021 FITNESS PREDICTIONS

WEARABLES WILL GET SMARTER.

“Wearables aren’t just about counting steps or running mileage anymore,” says Pam Peeke, MD, assistant professor of medicine at the University of Maryland and a member of the Equinox Health Advisory Board. “Apps and devices are also addressing health and wellness in general in this burgeoning $95 billion dollar wearable technology industry. Examples include the Oura ring that speaks to all things sleep, the Upright GO, a posture corrector using biofeedback, and Embr Labs Wave, a unique science-based wrist wearable that optimizes thermal wellness. These new wearables pair with apps that provide valuable data to both the wearer as well as their medical providers. I predict that this technology will soon evolve to allow connectivity among devices, as well as expansion of new device placements on the body, like the neck, back, and chest.”

RESOLVE CONFLICT WITH EQ.

Emotional intelligence is often misconstrued as niceness—particularly when it comes to moments of confrontation, according to Daniel Goleman, co-director of the Consortium for Research on Emotional Intelligence in Organizations at Rutgers University, in a recent article in the Harvard Business Review.

Goleman splits EQ into components (self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management), and suggests ways of deploying them in a moment of conflict:

-Control initial impulses or anxiety around the conversation by harnessing self-awareness and self management

-See the situation from another person’s POV with the use of social awareness in the form of empathy. You’ll help them feel heard in a potentially challenging moment.

-Handling conflict is an important part of relationship management. You’d say what you have to say, clearly and strongly, and in a way the other person can comprehend.
