Celebrate Women’s History Month: Yendry

In honor of Women’s History Month, we spoke to trailblazing female musicians in our community about what this month means to them. Here, our conversation with singer-songwriter Yendry, known for tracks like El Diablo, Se Acabó, and Nena.

WHAT DOES WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH MEAN TO YOU?

Women’s History Month was created to commemorate the importance of women’s role in history. The fact that we need to have a month dedicated to it reveals that the woman has not been taken into consideration during all these years—not in history, art, or science books. I’m happy that today’s society is becoming aware of it, but I’m looking forward to reading about it in school books.

What are you most looking forward to in 2021?

I really miss performing, so the most important things I’m looking forward to are concerts and festivals. Live music’s energy is what we need, especially in times like these.

Which female artists from the past or present inspire you and why?

Artists like Whitney Houston, Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James, Missy Elliott, Mary J. Blige, and Beyoncé really gave me lessons to learn and the confidence to have no limits looking at my future projects.

HOW WILL YOU CELEBRATE THIS MONTH?

I try to keep myself informed by searching for female artists, sharing, and supporting them, and by reading women’s biographies that inspire me.

WHAT DOES WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT MEAN TO YOU?

Women’s empowerment means taking action to have gender equality and equal opportunity by breaking stereotypes and raising awareness. We tend to think that little girls need to be taught about gender equality, but the conversation needs to be directed towards boys too. I think kids are the key to changing society.

Where are you hoping to travel in the future?

Having the opportunity to grow up between two places helped me to have a more open approach to life. I love traveling and getting to know new cultures. I still have some places I want to visit and bring my music to—why not? Argentina and Iceland are at the top of my list!
