THE CHECK-IN

MONDAY | 4.5.2021 Over the past year, we’ve connected with you through daily emails. As the world begins to open up, we want to stay in touch in a different way. You’ll hear from us twice a week: Once in a themed email with fitness, lifestyle, and health tips and once in a longer format, where we go deep on one topic or conversation. We can’t wait to continue this journey with you. Today, we’re exploring travel and the ubiquitous wanderlust of the moment.

TRAVEL TREND REPORT

Pablo Henderson, VP of marketing for Equinox Hotels, shares travel and hospitality trends:

Revenge travel:

“Revenge travel is the anticipation of increased demand after this lockdown period. Industry experts foresee the pendulum swinging aggressively in the opposite direction with travel really coming back. As a great number of people are vaccinated, they may feel much more comfortable getting on a plane, and travel is going to express itself in lots of different ways, incorporating new traditions created last year, like camping and exploring the outdoors.”

Wellness and immunity practices:

“At the Hotel, we introduced additional immunity-boosting items in our in-room offerings. In general, you’re going to see more of an emphasis on that, whether it’s a vitamin C pack or highlighting ingredients like cinnamon and turmeric for on-site dining and hospitality. Also, outdoor spaces are at even more of a premium. People want pools in general, but especially right now.”

JOURNEY THROUGH FOOD.

“While I haven’t yet booked a flight to Mexico, I’ve been dreaming of a trip there,” says Equinox editor Leah Bhabha. “Instead, I’m leaning heavily into upping my taco game.” She’s been preparing this black bean version, which features homemade sweet potato tortillas.

PRO TIP: POLISH YOUR LANGUAGE SKILLS.

Prepare for a future trip abroad by learning (or brushing up on) a new language. Vincent Perez who teaches online French classes and hosts a YouTube show, recommends immersing yourself in more than one way:

1. Hack Netflix with this tool that adds multiple subtitles to make your experience watching foreign TV shows much more effective.

2. Use virtual flashcards to keep adding words to your vocabulary.

3. A language learning app like Duolingo provides necessary structure.

4. Group practice will help you get to a new level. Try Idlewild’s Zoom classes.
