THE CHECK-IN

TRAIN FOR SPEED.

“This is the move that’s going to get you faster,” says Breanna Cummings of the high skips she includes in her Tabata: Explosive Finish Line class on Equinox+. “Whether you run, whether you jump, whatever your sport is, this helps you. I want you to think about powering yourself up.” Try it Tabata-style for 20 seconds on, 10 seconds off, for eight rounds.

PREP MAPLE-GINGER GRANOLA.

This simple recipe, courtesy of the Bite Me Balance cookbook, features chia, cashews, pecans, and ginger. It’s rich in protein and fiber, and keeps in an airtight container for up to one week.

HAVE A VIRTUAL ART DISCUSSION.

In a recent study published in PLOS One, researchers explored a number of effective ways to reduce loneliness during social distancing, including talking about art. “Participants were asked to describe [a] painting, to use their imagination to describe why, how and when it was made, and to describe associations that appear when looking at the painting such as feelings, memories, and thoughts,” explains Chris Williams, MD, the study’s lead author. Consider starting a group with friends. Have everyone check out a specific piece of art virtually, then discuss it over Zoom, Houseparty, or FaceTime.

START WITH 10/10.

“Every day, I write down 10 things that I am grateful for and 10 things I would like to accomplish before the day is over,” says Jenna Mango, Tier 3 trainer at Southport in Connecticut. Twenty things can seem overwhelming but Mango says they can be as big or small as you like. “For the to-dos, something as simple as drinking enough water is sufficient. For gratitude, I might write down having a sweatshirt on a chilly day. This helps hold me accountable while reminding me of the amazing things life has blessed me with.”
